Request an estimateWhat goes into a patio cover installation in Anaheim?
Patio cover installation puts a roof of aluminum, metal, vinyl, canvas or lattice over your patio, either attached to the house or standing on its own posts, so you get shade and a space outside you'll use. At Skyview Anaheim Sunrooms & Patios, I plan each cover with you and our crew builds it for homes in Anaheim.
Most people who call us have a patio that gets full sun all afternoon, so it sits empty from spring into fall. What you pay turns on the size of the cover, whether it's attached or freestanding, the material and what the slab under it needs for posts. The schedule turns mostly on design, paperwork and getting materials made, since the build itself is the short part. If you think you'll want walls someday, tell me up front, because a cover can be planned as the start of a patio enclosure. When I come out, I measure, look at the slab and talk it through, and the estimate gives you the figure for your own patio.
How we handle a patio cover installation
I start with the ground. Before anyone cuts into your patio, we find out what kind of slab is under it, because that decides where the posts can go and how they're anchored. Then we work through attached or freestanding and the material that suits your home. I usually lean toward attached when the roofline allows it, since it shades the doorway and needs fewer posts, but a freestanding cover makes more sense out in the yard or where the roof won't take it, and the choice stays yours. Most of the waiting happens before we build, during design and paperwork, so I keep you posted through that stretch and you always know what's next. Once the materials are in, our lead installer and our own installers set the posts, put up the frame and roof, and clean up before they leave.
A cover is often the first piece of a bigger plan. If walls and windows might follow, it pays to work through sunroom design now so the posts and roof suit the room later, and if you'd rather have a closed room than shade, we also build vinyl sunrooms.
What changes a patio cover job in Anaheim
Permit questions for a patio cover here start with the city's building office, which puts out bulletins on permit, code and plan requirements, including one just for patio covers. I don't guess at what your job needs. We find out what the building office asks for on your project, take care of the permit paperwork when the job needs it, and check with the city before we build if anything is unclear. On a single-family lot, the city's zoning code doesn't count a patio cover toward lot coverage or area limits, but the Building Code and the city's rules on what may extend into a yard still apply, so placement still matters. In multiple-family zones, a cover up to ten feet high may be allowed over an existing, permitted ground-floor private patio. If you're in east Anaheim, the city says the wildfire threat there is real, and the state has Cal Fire sort land into moderate, high and very high fire hazard zones, so we ask the city whether your lot's zone changes anything before we pick materials. For questions about your own lot, the city is the place to ask.
We're based in Anaheim and work here and in the cities around it. A lot of the patios we see are concrete slabs poured off a back slider, some patched or added onto over the years, and we see the same mix on jobs in Fullerton and Orange, so every slab gets the same look before we plan posts.
Why call us for a patio cover
I measure your patio myself
I come out to look at the job, take measurements and talk the cover through with you, and our lead installer and our own installers do the building. You deal with the same small team from the first visit to the last post.
Planning the build since 2013
I ran schedules for a busy company before learning to build sunrooms from the crews I used to plan for, and we started this business in 2013. That's why you'll hear from us at each step instead of wondering what's next.
Licensed and fully insured
We're licensed and fully insured on every cover we put up. A cover ties into your house or your slab, so you want the people building it covered.
Planned to your Anaheim zone
The city treats a cover on a house lot differently from one over a ground-floor condo or apartment patio, so I check which rules your home falls under before we draw anything. That way the design starts from the right limits instead of being redrawn later.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a patio cover cost in Anaheim?
Your price comes down to the size of the cover, whether it's attached or freestanding, the material and what your slab needs for the posts, and I give you the figure for your patio at the estimate. A bigger span, a solid roof instead of lattice, or extra concrete work for the post bases pushes it up, while a smaller attached cover usually keeps it lower.
How long does a patio cover project take from estimate to finish?
The build itself is short, and most of the time goes to the weeks before it. One Orange County installer lists 1 to 2 weeks for design and estimate, 2 to 4 weeks for permits, 2 to 3 weeks for materials to be made, 1 to 3 days to install and 1 week for final inspection. I keep you posted through the design and paperwork stretch so you know where things stand.
Who can install a patio cover in California?
A contractor with the state license board's D-3 Awnings license can install, change or repair aluminum, metal, vinyl or canvas patio covers, attached or freestanding. Lattice-type covers can also be built by a B General Building, C-5 Framing and Rough Carpentry, or C-27 Landscaping contractor. The awning license doesn't cover patio enclosures or carports, so if you plan to close the patio in, ask which license the contractor holds for that work.
Does a small patio cover job in Anaheim need a licensed contractor?
Yes, if the work needs a permit of any kind, because California requires a licensed contractor for that even when the job is under $1,000. The same goes when whoever does the work hires helpers, so a small cover built with a hired crew still calls for a license.
What should I check before cutting into my patio slab for posts?
Find out whether it's a post-tension slab, one with steel cables pulled tight inside the concrete, before anyone saw cuts or breaks it. A City of Milpitas handout warns that cutting one of those cables can be very dangerous and expensive to repair. That's the check we make before any saw comes out.
How do I take care of a patio cover in Orange County?
Not much, by one Orange County installer's account, since a well-made cover needs little upkeep in the county's climate, though regular care still matters. That installer suggests a yearly wash with mild soap and water, clearing the gutters on attached covers, and checking fasteners and seals now and then.
